Our Guide to Helical Piles

What are Helical Piles, how they work and why GoliathTech Utah sets a higher standard in foundation installation.

Building in Utah requires more than a standard concrete footing. Expansive clay, rocky terrain, freeze-thaw cycles, and seismic activity demand a deep foundation system engineered for long-term performance.

That’s why Helical Piles are the preferred solution for residential, commercial, and industrial construction across Utah.

At GoliathTech Utah, we install galvanized Helical Piles that are torque-verified, corrosion-resistant, and designed to outperform traditional concrete foundations in strength, speed, and durability.

In this guide, we go into detail and explain what Helical Piles are, how they work and why GoliathTech Utah is setting the standard for foundation installation in Utah and Wyoming.

What Are Helical Piles?

Helical Piles (also called helical piers or screw piles) are deep foundation elements made from high-strength steel shafts with one or more helical plates welded to the base.

Instead of excavating and pouring concrete, Helical Piles are:

  • Rotated into the ground using hydraulic torque motors

  • Installed to engineered load-bearing depths

  • Immediately capable of supporting structural loads

The helical plates advance through soil like a screw, anchoring into stable bearing strata below frost depth with minimal disturbance.

How Helical Piles Work

1. Engineered for Your Project

Every installation begins with structural calculations. We evaluate:

  • Axial compression and tension loads

  • Lateral load requirements

  • Soil conditions

  • Frost depth compliance

Pile diameter, helix size, and shaft configuration are selected accordingly.

2. Torque-Monitored Installation

Helical Piles are hydraulically rotated into the ground. As they advance:

  • Surrounding soil is compacted

  • Bearing capacity increases

  • Installation torque is measured in real time

Torque directly correlates to load capacity — providing engineered verification during installation.

3. Immediate Load Transfer

Helical Piles are hydraulically rotated into the ground. As they advance:

  • Surrounding soil is compacted

  • Bearing capacity increases

  • Installation torque is measured in real time

Torque directly correlates to load capacity — providing engineered verification during installation.

Galvanized Steel Helical Piles: Stronger Than Concrete

Unlike concrete, which can crack and degrade, GoliathTech Helical Screw Piles are built from high-performance structural steel:

  • 60 Ksi steel (55 Ksi for larger diameters)

  • Fully galvanized tubes, heads, and helices

  • Protected against rust and corrosion

This galvanized steel construction ensures long-term resistance to soil moisture and environmental exposure.

Concrete can weaken over time. Galvanized steel maintains structural integrity.

GoliathTech Double Protection System

Utah’s freeze-thaw cycles cause soil movement that can shift traditional foundations. Our Helical Piles are engineered for protection inside and out.

Internal Protection

Most piles (except larger diameters) are:

  • Filled with polyurethane

  • Preventing internal ice formation

  • Reducing expansion stress during freezing conditions

External Protection

All standard piles are:

  • Fully hot-dip galvanized

  • Protected at tubes, heads, and helices

This dual-layer protection resists corrosion and frost-related movement.

Exclusive GoliathTech Anchoring System

GoliathTech Utah Helical Piles feature a proprietary nut-type fastening system that:

  • Secures the structure directly to the pile

  • Prevents lateral movement

  • Prevents vertical shifting

  • Offers high resistance to tearing forces

This added stability is especially important in Utah’s variable soil conditions and seismic zones.
